Coral Gables Community Foundation presents Williamson Cadillac HUMMER Athena Award Luncheon: Joyce Elam, 2007 Recipient

 

The 2007 Williamson Cadillac HUMMER ATHENA Award Luncheon was held September 21, 2007, and hosted by the Hyatt Regency Coral Gables. This international award program, now licensed in more than 375 cities, honors outstanding individuals who given back to their communities and have helped women achieve their full potential professionally. The recipient of this year’s award for Miami-Dade County was Joyce Elam, PhD, and Dean of FIU’s College of Business. Also honored as finalists were Donna Abood, Lynn Bauer, Deena Katz, Teresa Rodriguez, Joanna Schwartz and Nicole Wild.

Dr. Joyce J. Elam is Executive Dean and James L. Knight Professor of Management Information Systems in the College of Business Administration at Florida International University (FIU), Miami, Florida and Vice-Provost, FIU Online. Dr. Elam is a recognized expert in the areas of the strategic use of information technology, the management of the information services function, and the use of information technology to support both individual and group decision-making and learning. She has also assumed a prominent role in the study of women in leadership and is responsible for an annual research study, which surveys women-led businesses in Florida.

Dr. Teri Logan, Associate Head of Miami Christian School, once again chaired the event and welcomed Channel 10’s Jen Herrera as the guest emcee for the luncheon program honoring the aforementioned amazing women. Assisting Jen Herrera and Dr. Logan with the presentation of gifts, flowers and awards to each of the finalists were Title Sponsor Ed Williamson and CGCF Executive Director Gloria Burns.

The Foundation was especially pleased to have a record number of sponsors including major sponsors like Williamson Cadillac HUMMER, the Hyatt Regency Coral Gables and Silver Hill Financial all of whom were presented with beautifully framed photographs taken by Dr. Logan.

During registration and lunch, the sell out crowd enjoyed a video presentation of the finalists and music by the very gifted Vicente Chavarria, a talented musician and composer now on scholarship at the University of Miami, as well as the very talented Rene Vidal, the music teacher at Miami Christian School where Chavarria graduated a few years back.

Coral Gables Community Foundation, the licensee for this program in Miami-Dade County since 2000, was established in 1991 by community leaders with a mission of fostering programs and initiatives that enhance the quality of life for people living and working in the City Beautiful. Seven inspiring individuals have been selected as finalists for the prestigious ATHENA Award for Miami-Dade County and will be guests of honor at the Williamson Cadillac HUMMER 2007 ATHENA Award Luncheon, on Friday, September 21st, 11:30 a.m., at the Hyatt Regency Coral GablesCoral Gables Community Foundation, the organization licensed to produce this countywide program, recently announced this year's finalists.
